This page covers the original streetcar line discontinued 1964. For the RTA line opened 2004, visit that page linked above. For thorough coverage of all eras of Canal Street, please use the link to H. George Friedman's website.

CAR 800:

First of the series car 800 signed for Cemeteries is parked at Canal Station in an indeterminate year. Scan of a Bert Ward image from the H. George Friedman collection added 03/26/20.

CAR 803:

Car 803 at Canal and St. Charles Sts. in March 1962. The switches connecting the inner and outer tracks are visible in the foreground. At right is a GMC TDH-5105 bus on either Desire or Franklin. R.S. Short photo from H. George Friedman collection. One photo added 09/14/13.

CAR 850:

Car 850 near the foot of Canal St. on March 17, 1964. The building in the angle formed with Common and South Peters Sts. advertises locally made Dr. Tichenor's mouthwash. Riverfront development after conversion to Canal buses changed all this. The 850 went to the Shore Line Trolley Museum in Branford, CT., where it is restored and operating. R.S. Short photo from H. George Friedman collection. One photo added 09/14/13.

CAR 900:

Car 900 on the Canal line outbound at Canal and Royal Sts. in a Bob Selle negative taken April 18, 1958. Scan from my collection added 07/29/19.

Car 900 at Canal Station in August 1962. It shows an early version of the 1960s rebuilds. Earl Hampton, Jr. collection. One photo added 04/10/12.

CAR 902:

Car 902 inbound at Canal and Baronne Sts. in December 1959. Note the marquees for former businesses (but the Saenger Theatre is still there). Uncredited slide from my collection added 03/08/20.

CAR 903:

Car 909 inbound at Canal and St. Charles Sts. on June 15, 1957. At right is a GMC old look bus on either the Gentilly or the Desire bus line. The pavement is wet, suggesting a sudden downpour that has cleared up. My collection. One photo added 12/19/11.

CARS 911 AND 915:

Cars 911 and 915 at the Cemeteries terminal of the Canal streetcar line on August 18, 1962. A monument in tribute to the volunteer firemen of New Orleans can be seen between the streetcars at Greenwood Cemetery. The end advertisement on 911 says, "Save Steps, Ride Transit." That of 915 talks about American General Savings & Loan Assn. Both cars offer an early look at NOPSI rebuilding of streetcars in the 1960s. Rounded windows from bus and trolley coach parts stocks have replaced upper sash and door fixtures. 911 sports an aluminum roof while 915 has a canvas one. Earl Hampton, Jr. and my collections. Four photos added 11/26/11, 12/11/11, and 04/10/12.

CAR 914:

Car 914 rounds the loop at the foot of Canal Street in August 1962. Collection of Earl Hampton, Jr. Two photos added 12/19/11.

CAR 915:

Cars 915 and 931 inbound at Canal and Baronne Sts. on August 17, 1962. The ad on the side is for Pontchartrain Beach. My collection. One photo added 11/26/11.

Car 915 inbound at Canal and Bourbon (first photo) and outbound at Canal and Dauphine (second photo) in August 1962. The first picture shows a 5301 bus on the Desire or Franklin line. The second picture has the K&B Camera Center and the Maison Blanche building in the background. Collection of Earl Hampton, Jr. Two photos added 12/19/11.

CAR 924:

Car 924 inbound at Canal and S. Prieur Sts. in December 1959. The 924 was shipped to Atlanta after Canal conversion and stored underground. Returned to New Orleans for the new Riverfront line, rebuilt as car 450. Currently idle. Uncredited slide from my collection added 03/08/20.

Car 924 outbound at Canal and N. Peters Sts. on December 22, 1959. William Volkmer slide from my collection added 06/25/20.

CAR 932:

Car 932 inbound at Canal and St. Charles is about to pass car 939 outbound in August 1962. In the background is a Marks Isaacs store, later replaced by a Woolworth. Collection of Earl Hampton, Jr. One photo added 12/20/11.

CAR 935:

Car 935 turns from Julia St. to City Park Ave. on January 27, 1951. On August 20, 1951, the line was cut back to a double stub end scissors crossover in the neutral ground at Canal St. and City Park Ave. Scan of a print purchased from Seth Bramson added 03/19/20.

CARS 938 AND 816:

Cars 938 and 816 at the Cemeteries terminal on April 29, 1964. Canal had about a month left before conversion to buses. Note the 816 without dash stripe, similar to the eventual 35 preserved 900 series streetcars for St. Charles. The windows, however, are not rounded as in the rebuild of the latter series. Both cars were scrapped June 12, 1964. Uncredited slide from my collection added 06/07/20.

CAR 940:

Car 940 at the Cemeteries end of the Canal line on August 19, 1950. During the time of the West End car line, Cemeteries cars turned back here between Greenwood Cemetery and New Basin Canal. City Park Ave. is in the background. When West End was discontinued on January 15, 1950, tracks were removed from the lake to this point, and Cemeteries cars were renamed Canal. On August 20, 1951, a scissors crossover end at Canal and City Park replaced this terminal. Image from the H. George Friedman collection added 11/10/16.

Car 940 on the Canal streetcar line at Canal and Dauphine Sts. in July 1962. Visible are Kress, Maison Blanche, and K&B Drug Stores. My collection. Two photos added 07/04/11.

CAR 941:

Car 941 outbound at Canal and Gayoso Sts. on February 1, 1964. This is the lot at Canal Station where NOPSI stored its diesel buses. My collection. One photo added 08/22/13.

Car 941 outbound at Canal and White Sts. about April 1964. Note the turnout to the ladder tracks of Canal Station begins on the river side of White. Some kind of car stop construction is happening on the inbound side. Slide from my collection added 11/10/16.

Cars 941, 927, 878, 846, and 939 at Canal Station on April 29, 1964. The Canal line had about a month left to operate. Scan of an uncredited slide added 03/19/20.

CARS 944 AND 945:

Cars 944 and 945 at Canal Station on February 24, 1959. Scan of a print purchased from Seth Bramson added 03/19/20.

CAR 946:

Car 946 inbound at Canal and Baronne Sts. in April 1964. My collection. One photo added 08/22/13.

CAR 951:

Car 951 on the Canal line looks pretty old with worn paint and silver fleet numbers. Contrast it with car 969 on the St. Charles in brand new paint with smaller white fleet numbers. This slide from my collection was taken July 20, 1954 at Canal and St. Charles Sts. One photo added 08/30/11.

CAR 952:

Car 952 inbound at Canal Station in the 1950s. Uncredited slide from my collection added 03/08/20.

Car 952 at the Cemeteries terminal on June 10, 1959. Clark Frazier photo from my collection added 03/08/20.

Car 952 on the Canal line at the river terminal in March 1960. One photo, unknown photographer, from the collection of H. George Friedman added 06/05/16.

Car 952 on the Canal line inbound at Carondelet St. in September 1963. I like the advertisement for Lay's Potato Chips ahead of the entrance door. The D.H. Holmes department store is in the background. For car 952's subsequent careers in Chattanooga, on the Riverfront, and in San Francisco, visit my Muni car 952 page. Collection of H. George Friedman. One photo added 05/30/12.

CARS 955 AND 938:

Cars 955 and 938 terminate and turn back near the Jung Hotel on February 16, 1958. This is probably due to Carnival parades further in on Canal. Rebuilding to eliminate unused outer tracks was recently completed (cars began operating again January 31). Some of the finishing touches, such as the cobblestone planter at left, are still being worked on. Collection of H. George Friedman. One photo added 08/22/13.

CAR 958:

Car 958 was the last regularly scheduled streetcar on the Canal line in the early morning hours of May 31, 1964. Here we see a packed 958 at the foot of Canal Street on the last trip outbound. Otto Goessl photo from my collection added 01/25/12.

CAR 959:

Car 959 shows a rebuild of the standee windows using GM 5105 bus parts. The car is inbound at Canal and Baronne Sts. in April 1964. My collection. One photo added 08/22/13.

CAR 972:

Super shiny renovated car 972 was the last one operated on the Canal line on May 31, 1964. The first photo shows it waiting inside Canal Station with a Flxible new look bus to the left and a wrecker to the rear. Note the service pits under the tracks. -- After car 958 finished its owl schedule, it pulled in and the 972 was sent in on Canal to St. Charles, where it met GMC bus 208 taking over the Canal line duties. The streetcar wore banners on the sides saying, "See Me On St. Charles." The second photo is a shot of 972 on Canal between Baronne and Carondelet at about five a.m. Next block in, it would take part in a brief changeover ceremony, switch over to the St. Charles track, and head uptown to Carrollton Ave. Otto Goessl photos in my collection added 01/25/12.

CANAL STATION:

Canal Station in August 1962. Collection of Earl Hampton, Jr. One photo added 04/10/12.
